After taking off her skirt Lindsey, who had been Lionel, unbuttoned her blouse, looked in the mirror and a big grin spread over her face. The MAU had worked perfectly.

I've been wondering how to comment on this story for a week or so now. I downloaded it when if was first posted, but postponed reading it until I'd had time to go back and re-read Bob H's other linked Altered Fates stories in order. Maybe that built up my expectations too much, but I found Project Zulo a bit disappointing. It seemed less strong that the stories leading up to it. It's not that it's bad by any means. The story is well-written, with lots of interesting ideas. The "secret history of the world" stuff was competently done, and the idea of the waxing and waning and waxing again of a magical field over eons is a clever idea that certainly provides a promising launch-pad for any Order Of Merlyn stories to come. It's just that I don't feel that linking them together in this story made any of the preceding stories any better, nor conversely that they would have been any weaker had Project Zulo not been written. Finally, for me at least, there's one element of Project Zulo where linking in a character from the earlier stories creates a major problem. In my opinion, the story is seriously disfigured by the nauseating retrospective whitewashing of Jamie Cochran/Julia Tamm. The Jamie/Julia of Tempest is an excellent piece of characterisation. Sure she's a ruthless, selfish hypocrite, but she's a consistent creation whose actions and values make perfect sense according to her standards. But in Project Zulo the author has obviously decided that Julia has to be one of "the good guys", and so stages a scene of post facto justification of her actions which felt horribly phoney. Julia sheds a crocodile tear, Lucius Duvall whips up a convenient vision of an alternative future and hey-presto - instant absolution. I almost gave up on the story in disgust at that point. Other characters who use magic to force their will on others are presented as "the bad guys", but nothing touches Teflon Julia.

You continue to amaze me with one great chapter after another. Keep up the great work. One of the best stories going.

If you like the "twists of fate" story format you'll like this one! The author did a basic and clean job here and it's a quick read that will leave you with a chuckle at the end!
