| Thanks all. Glad to see experimentation is appreciated even in this stodgy, traditionalist venue ;) Unfortunately I didn't get this one in under the wire for National Poetry Month. As for the picts, the raw materials were from the covers for sewing patterns sold by Simplicity, McCalls, Butterick etc. and manipulated in the Photoshop clone Photoplus. The outdoor scenery was mine, though. I'm getting around to writing some "real fiction" soon but I think, Dark, you are right, form is necessary or at least useful in training one to distill impressions. Haiku form may be a bit extreme translated to fiction. That's why I appreciate reviews because writing is not like music: if you hit a wrong note you know you did something wrong. Not always so in writing (I paraphrase Ursula LeGuin). For example "hard word combinations" as pointed out by Dreammaker are a good clue to me that I have distilled inaccurately but do not know it because of my intimate prior knowledge of what I'm writing. "Cutting bullshit" while not completely massacring grammar in regular prose is something I have to work at more for my next stories. Sigh, editing. |
