| I’ve just been rereading Tempest, and I’ve just noticed that I’d failed to comment on this story the first time round. It’s another well-written and interesting Altered Fates story from Bob H, and I certainly enjoyed it, but it is a bit disjointed. Essentially the Nancy De Niro/Peter Cochran swap, and the Julia Tamm identity theft plot-lines form two stories that don’t really tie together. I must say however that Jamie Cochran is an inspired piece of characterization. Ruthless selfishness wrapped up in complete hypocrisy, but drawn believably and subtly with lots of lovely little touches: “Had she allowed the transformation to progress further she might have become as hard and as ruthless as Julia, something she did not want to happen” Personally, I think that this line is absolutely perfect. This sort of unconscious double standard is precisely the way that selfish, ruthless people persuade themselves that they’re somehow justified and good, and it’s exactly right for Jamie. Beautifully drawn too is the way she dumps her infant victims on a street-corner, but pats herself on the back for being so considerate as to actually wait for the police car before abandoning them to the tender mercies of the child welfare system. Then off she drives to her wonderful new life, wrapping herself warmly in convenient assumptions about the likely future of the babies. Jamie has a nice little vicious streak too. The girl who bitterly resented being unattractive herself, forces that fate on Julia and her daughter. Perfect revenge on the attractive girls Jamie envied so much. A very nice, nasty piece of work. |
