| I like your description of Brinn (and Tarl) as Gorean James Bond, even if James is not such a inflexible moron. I have myself compared Elizabeth/Vella with a Bond Girl. As for firing an longbow from an tarn, it will be just as problematic as from an horse. The bottom half of the bow collides with the animals torso! Wings will just make this worse. Which is why riders use short bows, which are either low powered (below even 50lb) or expensive elaborate high strain material design (glued layered sandwich of sinew+wood+horn wrapped in glue drenched sinew, called a composite bow). Yes, JN describes his warriors as supermen, but that is exactly it, the warriors. Even the guards are shown using crossbows, like the untrained French. Which loses them the rapid fire of warbows, which they would only sacrifice because they must, because they can not use the strong warbows. The panthers are surely learned on the job, without any other chance, given that gorean women, both free ladies and slave, are basically pets (free peasants are better off, but least likely to want/need to become panthers). But even so, they must somehow survive travelling to the northern forrest as single women (never forget that part!) and then getting accepted there (which fighting untrained against experienced should be near impossible, at least my aikido and quaterstaff experience suggests that, both require months of instruction). Then they should learn archery fast, simply for food. That requires just 1 hour introduction and the rest is pure self training/experience, with hours available every day (nothing much else to do in the forrest, apart from hunt/prepare/eat food and maintain body+equipment and have masturbation orgies). So simple experience should bring them up to speed. Food animals are of course not standing still, they do move, and can attack. My experience with 3D parcourse (foam animals mounted on rails) suggests that motion compensation is not that difficult (basically more target motion speed and arrow distance/flighttime need aiming at point further before where target is when firing). The rest is again training/experience. Fear is the big one, firing in panic with zero result, instead of holding and hitting, or simply fleeing fast. That would be an credible training deficit. But any band existing long enough to pick up members has oldies who have survived battles, and should train their new ones. If only in their own interest of having better defense! And they should know from experience (or simple darwininan selection) that even when fighting men, archery will faster deliver results (and with distance be safer) than one on one with spears and nets (at least if one aims for staying free and not for captures and profit). Unfortunately JN fails at writing good female characters, including his pantheres. Both Olga and you are a lot better at that, and at writing style. |

I could fill an entire page on how much I loved this; I can't think of a single thing that could be changed, the characters felt real, the situations were handled extremely well, the concept of a magic cock ring is an incredibly interesting take on the "magic artifact" premise that's been used to the point of cliche and was very refreshing.
